Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes preview
History points to value bet So Si Bon in the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield today.

The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and the George Main Stakes are the two feature Group One’s this weekend. Both offer plenty of value for punters.

The 1600m George Main Stakes is a WFA feature in the harbour city. Down south in the Victorian capital, Caulfield hosts the Sir Rupert Clarke, a 1400m handicap.

Caulfield feature

The G1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 1400m at Caulfield is a terrific open affair. As adventurous villagebet punters, we love open betting races .

The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes has undergone a number of name changes. However, the list of winners showcases many famous Australian racehorses.

Manikato, Testa Rossa, Exceed and Excel and more recently, Santa Ana Lane, have won this September feature.

Historical precedents this year point to a clear winner.

There are three races to focus on from a historical perspective. The Bobbie Lewis, The Sofitel, and the 1200m Listed race at Moonee Valley, two weeks before the Group 1.

The only race where it does not matter where you finished is the Bobbie Lewis. The other two races you need to have finished top four. Those runners from the Bobbie Lewis need to at least have placed at Group 3 level at 1400m.

There are no specific weight precedents, aside from last year’s victor Jungle Cat, which had carried more than 55kg.

However, of the other winners this century who have carried more than 55kg, the majority have been at double-figure odds.

One quirky precedent is that horses trained in Melbourne do not have a great record. If your selection comes from country Victoria, another state or even New Zealand, it adds to their hopes.

With these precedents in place, we have come up with No.5 So Si Bon ($8.50) as our main bet.

No.8 Widgee Turf ($17.00) represents the best each-way bet.

No.12 Amphitrite is a chance, and No.11 Streets Of Avalon ($41.00) is our longshot. Add Madison County and Begood Toya Mother as top four hopes.

George Main Stakes the feature at Randwick

At Randwick, a horse will attempt to emulate three of the best horses to have graced Australian racetracks.

After wins in the Winx Stakes and Chelmsford Stakes, Samadoubt will attempt to complete the trio in the G1 George Main Stakes.

This has only previously been accomplished by the former Stan Fox runner, Purple Patch, and three of the best, Kingston Town, Lonrho and Winx.

Focusing on today’s race, the three races to concentrate on are the Tramway, Chelmsford and Winx Stakes.

The Tramway shows us that if you finish within 5 lengths of the winner in that race, and you are in the range $12.00 – $31.00, you are a chance in the Chelmsford.

Horses who come into the George Main, straight from the Winx Stakes, need to have run top four, and need to be between $5.00 and $11.00 in the market.

While Chelmsford runners need to have finished top five, and be under $12.00 in the market.

This leaves us with Happy Clapper as our main bet ($5.00). The well-supported Dreamforce qualifies on his form. Unfortunately, his price has squeezed from $11.00 into $4.60. While for us he is a bet, he is now “unders” for the criteria. Avilius and Samadoubt are add ins for the exotics.

The big improver coming into the race will be Angel Of Truth ($26.00). After his good fresh run in the Chelmsford where he just missed a top five finish, he’s right on track.

Good luck on Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Day!
