Castelvecchio storms to victory in Group 1 Randwick mile

April 22, 2019 | By More

Castelvecchio ($2.90) stormed home for villagebet punters in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.

The mighty son of Dundeel achieved Group One success and looks certain to carry on achieving success for connections.

Castelvecchio recorded the fastest time by a two-year-old over the famous Randwick mile.

“He’ll improve out of sight as a three-year-old. He has a lot of maturing to do. He’s only a small horse. He’ll come back bigger and stronger,’ said trainer Richard Litt.

Rider of Castelvecchio, Josh Parr, said that 1600m would be his go, which the horse confirmed in outstanding style.

Villagebet spruiked the horse all week and The Mayor of Thoroughbred Village made Castelvecchio his Weekend Special.

The Weekend Special, published with racing tips and best bets, is an honour afforded only the most certain of certainties.

The Mayor’s Weekend Special comes off the heels of selecting Santa Ana Lane in the TJ Smith at $7.70.

Pierata scores in Group 1 All Aged Stakes

In the feature WFA event of the day, Pierata scored a popular win in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m).

The outstanding son of Pierro went out second favourite and proved too strong to record his maiden win at the elite level.

“We’ve been knocking on the door for so long,” said his delighted trainer, Greg Hickman.

“He’s been running the sectionals and you could see he’d improved with his coat and attitude this week.”

Pierata impressed jockey Tommy Berry with the way he travelled in the run.

“He travelled so sweetly for me.”

“At the top of the rise, on the better going, he was able to let down with that signature turn of foot.”

Concrete victory in the first race

Villagebet started the day well with Concrete winning at $4.60

Trainer Joe Cleary hopes Concrete will progress towards the $1.3 million Kosciuszko – the country version of the Everest.

His right-hand man, Todd Blowes, trains Noble Boy who is also set for the race.

Noble Boy won impressively in the NSW Country Championship Final at Randwick two weeks ago.

The two Queenbeyan trainers are set for an intriguing showdown in the Kosciuszko.

Villagebet tips unlucky

In other bets, Villagebet was alive going into the final leg of the Sydney Quadrella. Castelvecchio-Pierata-Trekking.

However, we missed on Tommy Berry’s mount Mahalangur in the last leg.

At Caulfield, we found Streets of Avalon $4.00 in the Victoria Handicap.

Unfortunately, we racked up 4 other placegetters, including all 3 of our best bets; Birth Of Venus, Sure Knee and Poised To Strike.

Horse racing is at Caulfield, Hawkesbury and Morphettville next weekend.
