Victoria Derby Day
Thought Of That is a controversial runner in the 2019 Victoria Derby

The Spring Carnival in Melbourne is one of the biggest sporting carnivals in the world and kicks off with Victoria Derby Day, the greatest thoroughbred race day of the year. There is nothing like being in Melbourne for Cup week and not even a wet Saturday will dampen the spirits of the near hundred thousand fans who attend Flemington.

Derby Day at Flemington

Derby Day at Flemington is the pinnacle of fashion and horse racing. Racegoers plan their outfits for months in advance, concentrating on style and colour. The ladies in their finest dresses and guys in the most stylish of suits. Derby Day is where the beauty and class abounds, not the least of which are the horses which are the finest in the world.

Best race card, and the beginning, of the best week of racing in Australia, is upon us, and this is a cracker of a race day at Flemington.

Empire Rose Stakes 1600m

The first of the Group 1’s is the Empire Rose Stakes 1600m for fillies and mares, formerly known as the Myer Classic (2005-2017).

This race is very difficult to read, from a historical perspective. The Tristarc Stakes at Caulfield is a good guide, but also several placegetters have come from the 1600m race on Cox Plate day.

Three favourites won in consecutive years (2007-2009), with Divine Madonna, Forensics and Typhoon Tracy. Since then, only two favourites have won, and one of those was Shoals, a 3yo filly, of which there are none this season.

The main precedent is a top seven finish in the Tristarc, and priced at $11.00 to $31.00. This criteria fits Invincibella, Aristia, Savatiano, Spanish Whisper, Baccarat Baby and Angelic Ruler.

Our main bet is No.3 Aristia $18.00, with Craig Williams on board. No.12 Baccarat Baby $23.00 is our big-priced each-way bet.

The other precedent is for the place getters. We require an interstate horse at $21.00 or more, and which has run at 1600m in its last run. Spanish Reef, Nettoyer and Fidelia fit this criteria, so better include in your exotics.

Coolmore Stud Stakes 1200m

The Coolmore Stud Stakes is the highly prestigious Group 1, down the straight for three year olds. This is a superb race, formerly the Ascot Vale Stakes, and the premier sprint in this class. Many terrific young colts have won this race and gone on to become some of the country’s most exciting stallions.

The three main lead-up races are the Blue Sapphire, Roman Consul, and the Brian Crowley. Placegetters in those events are key to this race.

Runners between $7.00 and $21.00 are in the right odds fit. Cosmic Force $7.00 is the lone qualifier. Cardiff $81, L’il Kontra $26 and Brooklyn Hustle $26 all qualify through their last start, but outside the odds range.

Make sure you add Exceedance to your exotics because of the precedent for the Golden Rose top 4 finishers to place in the Coolmore.

Victoria Derby 2500m

Our 3rd Group 1 for the day is the main dance, the Victoria Derby.

The key lead-up races are the Spring Champion, Caulfield Classic and The Vase.

Placegetters in the Spring Champion Stakes are in line of sight. Remember that only two horses have won the Spring Champion/Victoria Derby double in the last decade. If you feel this is a real trend, then it’s a knock on Shadow Hero. Place hope only.

Qualifiers from the other two races are price-related. Horses who qualify from these races, but are priced at $5.00 or less, are only allocated place hopes.

The result of this analysis is Warning $8.50 which we will make as our main bet. Long Jack $18, Southern Moon $18 and Relucent $17 are added as each-way bets. The top three in the market should be added for the place in all exotics.

Try taking a trifecta in the Derby using proven trifecta strategies.

Cantala Stakes 1600m

The Group 1 Cantala Stakes is an amazing race with 16 horses thundering over the mile course under handicap conditions.

The race has had many names in the past, from The George Adams to The Honda, Nissan and Emirates Stakes.

Looking at the history of the race, it’s extremely difficult to find form patterns.

Two races to look at are the Moonga Stakes and the Crystal Mile.

The qualifiers from the Moonga finished top four, and the top six finishers from the Crystal Mile are also prominent.

Horses in the range $9.00 to $26.00 appear to hold the key.

Royal Meeting, Cliff’s Edge, Sikandarabad, Chief Ironside, Variation each fit the criteria.

Royal Meeting $9.00 is the main bet, with each of the other 4 horses mentioned all worth each-way bets. Even the emergency, Variation, if he gains a start.

The Epsom has some precedent, but only for those runners at $11.00 or more, and mainly for the place.

There is also a precedent for the winner to come from 2000m back to the mile.

Fifty Stars, Life Less Ordinary, Rock, Star Of The Seas and Mahameides, are each worth a look for the exotics.
