Makybe Diva Stakes to feature on mystic journey to Cox Plate
By mid-September in Australia, the Spring Racing Carnival really kicks into gear with the time-honoured Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington taking centre stage.
The G1 Makybe Diva Stakes, known by more experienced racing folk as the Craiglee Stakes, has an auspicious list of winners. Household names such as Dual Choice, Dulcify, Ming Dynasty, Weekend Hussler and the great Northerly have annexed this historic race.
High quality field for the Makybe Diva Stakes
The 2019 edition of the Makybe Diva Stakes is a high quality field with many chances. Bright sunshine will bathe Flemington racecourse for the race.
Mystic Journey returned in the G2 PB Lawrence Stakes with an emphatic win signalling the start of a stellar season for the champion mare. She is looking to stamp her authority on the Spring with a G1 victory at Flemington. A win will catapult her Spring campaign that will culminate in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
She takes on experienced campaigners like Humidor, Gailo Chop and Hartnell, all trying to keep the youngsters at bay. The field is also enhanced by handy stayers, Rostropovich and Yucatan. Both are returning for a successful 2019 Spring.
Casting our usual historical eye over the field, the criteria focuses on a genuine Group One miler, also a horse who has run between well in the G1 Memsie Stakes, and a galloper whose odds of winning are between $6.00 and $17.00.
Intriguingly, the only horse that fits this bill completely is the Godolphin horse, Hartnell. Instead of the favourite, we will take the historical form line and make Hartnell our main bet at $11 on Unibet.
Hartnell is a super galloper and ran a cracking race in the G1 Memsie Stakes a fortnight ago.
Oohood also meets the form criteria. She is showing odds of $71.00, so perhaps consider her when betting on exotics. She is also at the right odds for betting on longshots.
There is a precedent for stayers who are first up. Horses such as Fawkner (2015), Moudre (twice-placed) and Manighar (placed). With this precedent we can add Rostropovich ($34.00) and Yucatan ($10.00), to the top four finishers. These are terrific each-way betting chances.
Summary of the Flemington feature
Mystic Journey is the one to beat but she will need to be near her best to win in this deep field. Add the other four year olds, the Queensland and S.A. Derby winners, last year’s runner up Kings Will Dream, the West Australian stakes performer Gatting and the Memsie winner, Scales Of Justice, and it is a strong field.
