Precedents abound on Autumn’s Super Saturday

March 8, 2019 | By More

The Australian Cup and Newmarket Handicap is the premier big race double on Autumn’s Super Saturday at Flemington.

A superb showcase of racing is in store, highlighted by the two prestigious Group Ones, but plenty of other great races are also on the program to feast upon.

For the Australian Cup 2000m, the obvious lead up race is the Peter Young Stakes 1800m held at Caulfield.

This race, known for over a century as the St George Stakes, has produced over 60% of the placegetters.

To make things more interesting, it’s not necessarily the winner that holds the key to this race.

Betting advice for the Australian Cup

In this year’s Australian Cup, the Godolphin runner, Avilius, is a short priced favourite and he does look a good bet.

However, from the Peter Young Stakes there are two horses who fit the bill of the precedent nicely. Both are Flemington specialists.

Shillelagh, better known as a miler, but her Mackinnon/Emirates Stakes run in the spring was better than it reads on paper.

With her running the best late sectional, she is the overs @ $26.00.

The other hope is Ace High. Another who has won at Group 1 level. Ace high sits at $14.00 right now, he loves Flemington, and 2000m third up looks ideal.

Ace High @ $14 each way and Shillelagh @ $5.50 the place are the two bets.

The Newmarket always a thrilling contest

The other Group 1 on Super Saturday at Flemington is the Newmarket Handicap at 1200m, and is one of the deepest editions of the race in 32 years.

If you like a runner here, I will not try to talk you out of backing it, as it is very open.

For the record, the precedent concentrates on the placegetters in the Lightning, and the top six in the Oakleigh Plate.

Going further into the form line, you need the Lightning placegetters to have won at WFA.

You can get good value with the Oakleigh Plate runners as you want $10 or better on the runners here.

That leaves you with In Her Time, Encryption, Booker, Bons Away, and Eduardo.

Booker loses points due to no Oakleigh Plate winner, winning the Newmarket, since Weekend Hussler in 2008.

So we like Eduardo @ $10.00 and Encryption is the overs @31.00.

Sydney Autumn Carnival

In Sydney we are back at Randwick, and we see two Group 1’s the Randwick Guineas and the Canterbury Stakes.

In the Guineas, The Autumn Sun is an odds on favorite, and if you like him, then you can back him.

I am a huge fan of Nakeeta Jane, and I like her backing up on the seven days, here.

The precedent is with The Autumn Sun, but I will back Nakeeta Jane @ $7.00.

Fundamentalist preps perfectly into this and is way overs @ $21.00

In the Canterbury Stakes, I think the first up runners are the precedent.

Pierata @ $3.60 is good value and Shoals @$7.50 the overs.

New Zealand racing

A big day’s racing is in store at Ellerslie, highlighted by the Auckland Cup, one of my favourite races.

I think the two top weights have it between them.

Both are in form and have performed at the top level at 3200m.

Like last week at the Guineas, we hope we can find you a winner.

Wishing everyone the best and lots of success on Super Saturday with your investments!
