Value winners hard to find on Golden Slipper Day

March 26, 2019 | By More

Golden Slipper day was great for the racing purists but for us punters, good value winners were hard to find.

Several short-priced favourites won for the big punters who invested thousands to win a small percentage.

Villagebet tipping service found 4 winners but unfortunately, nothing for the small time punters to get excited about.

No holiday in the Maldives just yet!

Sydney racing at Rosehill

In Sydney, The Autumn Sun set the scene by prevailing in an epic battle with Arrogant in the Rosehill Guineas.

Australia’s top colt started at around $1.40 with bookmakers.

Kiwi galloper Arrogant made him earn every cent by stretching him almost all the way down the straight.

Big punters who invested heavily on the favourite had their hearts in their mouths but happy to get the win in the end.

Most of us though sat out and watched this incredible contest, truly one of the most exciting Rosehill Guineas in the history of the race.

Champion galloper Winx extended her winning streak to 32 with a stunning win in the Group One George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill.

Winx started at the prohibitive odds of around $1.06, which only gave big punters something to smile about.

One punter for example had his usual $250,000 on Winx.

He’s done this for almost every one of her starts, this time winning a cool $15,000 after risking a quarter of a million.

“She’s a very special horse,” said trainer Chris Waller. “I’m sure she knows what’s going on.”

Hopefully, from a betting volume perspective, she never knows ”what’s going on” as the pressure would be unbearable.

On Winx, she is on an incredible winning streak that has now stretched to 32 with her win in the George Ryder.

Did you know she’s been beaten 6 times? There’s a snippet to keep in mind for your next trivia night!

The Golden Slipper

The Golden Slipper of course went to one of the Godolphin horses, Kiamichi, who started at the long odds of $31.70.

Kiamichi won the G3 Magic Night only a week earlier.

Despite jumping from barrier 17 this time, she seems to relish the soft Rosehill tracks and was too strong.

A great win at $31 for those who backed her against the more fancied Godolphin runners.

Racing on the Mornington Peninsula

At Mornington, the Irish-bred Steel Prince showed great strength to win at $2.60.

The gelding doesn’t know how to run a bad race and was a nice tonic for Villagebet punters.

A brilliant win by Self Sense ($13.20) in the Mornington Cup, to go with this Yarra Valley Cup only 6 days ago. Tough customer!

The last race was a “gimme” for the “Get Out Stakes”, but again there wasn’t much on offer as far as value winners were concerned.

Mr Quickie lumped the top weight to win the Mornington Guineas at $1.95.

Punters finally felt good about themselves on the drive home from the peninsula. Enough to grab a Maccas from the drive-through!

All in all, Villagebet selected 4 winners but value was hard to find.

Check out our complete list of winners.

Back to Rosehill again next weekend with great country racing at Bendigo. See you then!
