Follow jockeys in the premiership title race
The end of the horse racing season is the time of year when a select group of jockeys are unashamedly desperate to ride a winner.
These riders are in contention for premiership titles.
These guys are stopping at nothing to get winning rides because it’s very prestigious to own a jockey’s premiership trophy.
They are sure to ride them with extraordinary desperation and skill.
Every ride on the final few days of the season is critical because the premiership title is often decided by just one or two wins.
Desperation to ride a winner
It’s not only on race day that you find people desperate to ride a winner.
Management teams work tirelessly throughout the weeks and months to pick up rides for their clients.
Jockeys in the race for premiership titles are found across the nation, from Queensland to Tasmania, from NSW to Western Australia.
In one recent year, jockeys Beau Mertens and Craig Williams were in a close tussle for the title in Melbourne.
Meanwhile, the race for placings behind Brenton Avdulla in Sydney (i.e.; Clark, Bowman, Berry and McEvoy) was on a knife edge.
Apprentice jockeys too are desperate to win the apprentice jockey premiership.
These young riders can set themselves up for a successful career if they can win an apprentice title.
This is great punting advice to bear in mind near the end of the racing season.
Current standings in Victorian jockey premierships
Craig Williams is a long way in front in Victoria, at this moment in February 2019.
The race for runner-up however is very close between Mark Zahra, Damien Oliver, Damien Lane and John Allen.
Jockeys vying for second-place would be worth following because a win is worth gold to them.
Two years after this article was published, a new superstar of the jockey landscape emerged. Female rider Jamie Kah will take the jockeys premiership in Victoria by a distant margin. Jamie’s success comes in the same year as Rachael Blackmore who won the Grand National.
The same could be said about the trainers, although often the race for trainers premiership is not as hotly contested.
Follow desperate jockeys in the final month of a season to reap the rewards.
